British Gas owner Centrica to cut 4,000 jobs after 'weak' year

Centrica, which owns British Gas, is cutting 4,000 jobs as it continues to lose customers. The energy supplier, which has operations in North America and Ireland as well as its main UK market, said group profits fell 17% to £1.25bn. Chief executive Iain Conn said the firm had a “weak” second half of 2017, and it was not helped by political and regulatory intervention in the UK. Bezos-backed 10,000 Year Clock now under construction

A clock designed to run for ten millennia without human intervention is now under construction. Booker offers 'golden' prize in 50th anniversary year

A special award to mark the 50th anniversary of the Booker Prize is being launched to find the best winner from the last half century. Five judges, including Hollie McNish and Simon Mayo, are each being assigned a decade and will put forward their favourite book of that period. The UK has seen an increase in visits from China, and is ready to welcome more visitors ahead of Chinese New Year. The UK saw strong growth from China during the first nine months of 2017, with spending up 48 per cent and visits up 33 per cent. VisitBritain is estimating full year figures of about 330,000 visits and spending of about £667 million. Tourism receipts and visitor arrival figures have reached record highs for the second time in two years in Singapore. Tourism receipts rose by 3.9 per cent to S$ 26.8 billion, due primarily to growth in visitor arrivals across all top ten markets and higher visitor arrivals from high-spending markets such as China, South Korea, United States and United Kingdom.
