The surge to almost $ 1.37 came after Bloomberg reported that the Spanish and Dutch finance ministers had agreed to seek a Brexit deal that kept the UK as close to the EU as possible. The pound rose more than 1% to $ 1.3691, its highest level since 24 June 2016. The currency had been trading at about $ 1.50 before the result of the referendum became clear. Later on Friday, sterling gave up some…

Friday, January 12, 2018 Manchester City have spent almost 15 years waiting to win a Premier League match at Anfield, but they could end that run this weekend. Liverpool host the runaway league leaders on Sunday afternoon, hoping to continue their excellent record against the Citizens and become the first team to win a domestic match against Pep Guardiola’s side in 2017-18. The best since Bradman? How does Smith do it?

The scale of the damage done to England by Steve Smith’s double century in the third Ashes Test is only matched by the sense of inevitability that the Australia skipper would get a monster score when he had only a few runs to his name. Smith added an unbeaten 229 to the 141 not out he made in the first Test and averages more than 200 in the series. He is winning the Ashes for his country. Not only that, but he is underlining his status as the number one…

Italy miss World Cup for first time since 1958 as Sweden qualify

Four-time champions Italy failed to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1958 after a play-off defeat against Sweden. It means the Azzurri will not be present in the competition for only the second time in their history having declined to play at the inaugural tournament in 1930. Midfielder Jakob Johansson’s deflected strike in the first leg was the difference as the second leg at Milan’s San Siro stadium ended goalless. Sweden sat back on their advantage and, despite the hosts enjoying 76% possession, they failed to find…

Italy in danger of missing first World Cup since 1958 as Sweden win first leg

Italy are in real danger of missing out on a first World Cup since 1958 after losing to Sweden in the play-off first leg at Solna’s Friends Arena. The only goal came when Jakob Johansson drilled home from 20 yards, via a Daniele de Rossi deflection. The Swedes were the better team in the first half, and while the Azzurri slightly improved after the break, they were still disappointing. Matteo Darmian went closest to equalising but hit the post. Italy – who will be without the suspended Marco Verratti –…
