There’s No Oculus Rift 2 Coming Anytime Soon

In the wake of Oculus’ decision to cut the price of the Oculus Rift with controllers to $ 400, there’s been some worry that this move indicates a major new platform update is imminent. It’s not a crazy idea — plenty of companies, from car dealerships to CPU and sometimes even GPU manufacturers will cut prices to clear inventory and make room for upcoming models. In Oculus’ case, however, that doesn’t seem to be what’s happening. Now, Facebook executives threw cold water on the idea of an upcoming new product…

Oculus Working With Qualcomm on Wireless Rift, Slashes Price in Half

A new report claims that Oculus is working with Qualcomm to design a headset that won’t require tethering to a PC or phone, and will sell for as little as $ 200. This standalone headset would be a huge step forward for the industry, and it couldn’t come at a better time for Oculus. Oculus may have first demonstrated the VR’s ability to generate community excitement, thanks to its fabulous Kickstarter debut. But the company has struggled over the last 12 months. Hardware shipments were delayed due to component shortages….

Palmer Luckey, co-founder of Oculus, has left Facebook

After six months of radio silence on the issue, Facebook has announced that Palmer Luckey is leaving the company. Luckey, who has made no social media posts since September 23, ran into trouble after being financially linked to Nimble America, a non-profit that described itself as a “social welfare 501(c)4 non-profit dedicated to shitposting in real life.” Since then, he’s kept himself scarce, only appearing in public to testify in Zenimax Media’s lawsuit against Oculus. (Luckey himself was found personally liable for $ 50 million in damages to Zenimax). It…

Oculus slashes Rift prices as sales sag

There’s been good news on the VR front of late, but precious little of it is coming from Oculus. Earlier this week, Sony announced it was closing on one million VR headsets sold since the launch late last year. Sony has moved 915,000 VR units to date, even though we haven’t seen many new VR games launch for the platform (though Resident Evil 7 is a notable exception). Oculus has been busy these last few months bringing its touch controllers to market, working on a new standalone headset that doesn’t require…

Oculus facing legal ban on VR code used in its products

The video game publisher that won a case against Facebook-owned Oculus has asked a judge to block the firm from using its code in virtual reality products. Earlier this month a US court ruled that Oculus had used ZeniMax’s code without permission. If the ban is granted, it could limit the number of games available for sale with the Oculus Rift VR headset. A spokeswoman for Oculus said that the company was continuing with its appeal. Tera Randall told Reuters that the original verdict was “legally flawed and factually unwarranted”….

Facebook closing nearly half its Oculus kiosks in Best Buy stores

[unable to retrieve full-text content] Facebook is removing hundreds of the Oculus Rift kiosks it partnered with Best Buy to create. Despite serving as technology demonstration platforms, too many of the kiosks were too under-used to justify continuing the partnership at certain stores. Facebook loses $500m Oculus virtual reality case

A US court has ordered Facebook and other defendants to pay $ 500m (£395m) after finding they unlawfully used a firm’s virtual reality technology. The jury found Oculus, which Facebook bought in 2014, used computer code belonging to video game developer Zenimax to launch its own VR headset. Oculus said it was “disappointed” and would appeal against the ruling. The case threatened to overshadow Facebook’s latest results, which showed it enjoyed a strong end to the year. Facebook’s net profit more than doubled to $ 3.6bn in the fourth quarter….
