Apple's iPhone battery 'slowdown' to be optional

A software update will let iPhone owners switch off the “battery saver” feature that slows down some models, Apple has confirmed. The option to switch off the feature will appear on the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, SE, 6S, 6S Plus, 7 and 7 Plus models. Last month, Apple apologised after it was found to be deliberately slowing down some of its devices. Customers were angry that Apple had not been upfront about its actions before the practice was discovered. Many had long suspected the company slowed older iPhones to encourage…

Microsoft’s Surface Book 2 Drains the Battery While Gaming, Even When Plugged In

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use. When Microsoft announced its refreshed Surface Book 2 last week, it was quite clear about how it wanted to position the product. “This is a desktop,” Panos Panay, Microsoft’s corporate VP of devices, declared. “For many, this is likely the most performant desktop they have ever seen.” Apparently Panay was working with a different definition of “performant” than the rest of us, however, because the Surface Book 2’s true stand-out feature this time around isn’t…

Tesla: World's biggest battery half-built

Tesla has reached the half-way point in its plan to build the world’s biggest battery, in South Australia. The plan to build the 100MW (129MWh) lithium battery grew out of a Twitter bet between Tesla boss Elon Musk and Australian software entrepreneur Mike Cannon-Brookes. Mr Musk said Tesla would build the wind-charged battery in 100 days or the state would not have to pay for it. It is designed to help prevent power cuts that regularly hit the region. Critics have said the area’s reliance on renewable energy sources has…

Tesla to build world's largest lithium ion battery in Australia

An Australian state will install the world’s largest lithium ion battery in a “historic” deal with electric car firm Tesla and energy company Neoen. The battery will protect South Australia from the kind of energy crisis which famously blacked out the state, Premier Jay Weatherill said. Tesla boss Elon Musk confirmed a much-publicised promise to build it within 100 days, or do it for free. The 100-megawatt (129 megawatt hour) battery should be ready this year. “There is certainly some risk, because this will be largest battery installation in the…

Battery with inbuilt 'fire extinguisher' developed

Researchers have designed a lithium-ion battery that contains a fire-extinguishing material, which is released if the battery gets too hot. Flame retardant triphenyl phosphate (TPP) sits inside a shell within the electrolyte fluid. The shell melts when the temperature reaches 150C (302F), releasing the chemical compound. In tests, battery fires were extinguished in 0.4 seconds. Lithium-ion batteries power many devices but are a known fire hazard. The Stanford University research team’s peer-reviewed paper has been published by the journal Science Advances. Previous attempts to incorporate TPP inside batteries without the…
